Are you tired of your parents, children, caregivers, and/or healthcare professionals telling you to stop wearing flip flops? Want to show off your new cute pedicure, but worried about how your feet will feel afterwards? Well, I’m here to convince you otherwise!
A couple weeks ago, I had the privilege of trialing a pair of orthotic flip flops! And let me tell you, these are the most comfortable flip flops I’ve ever slipped my foot into.
But first… a little back story into my life (well really, just my feet!)
I have extremely high arches and small feet. My friends used to laugh and joke that my feet looked like barbie’s feet! Throughout my childhood and adulthood, I’ve had many ankle sprains, which have resulted in a lot of instability in my ankles. I’ve suffered from ankle and plantar fascia pain for years as a result. When I started my clinical rotations in Physical Therapy school, my feet really started killing me. I went to a podiatrist, he injected me with cortisone shot (that was only temporary) and fit me with $300 custom orthotics that insurance didn’t cover. Well guess what? I could only put those orthotics in one particular shoe, my Sperry’s, which I chose as my shoe for clinicals. The Orthotics helped some, but my feet still hurt on the weekends when I was running errands, hiking, or walking around my house.
I eventually came to the difficult decision that I had to give up my cute ballerina flats and the Old Navy Flip Flops I owned in every color to match my outfits! I purchased Asics tennis shoes and Sperry’s, and they were the only shoes I could wear without pain. During the summer, I bought expensive flips flops that claimed to have high arches. But to no avail, my feet still hurt in them. I never thought I would have relief during the summer.
Now, back to present day.
I’ve been wearing Archies flip flops for 3 weeks now and let me tell you, they have changed my life. I’m able to walk my dog several times a day, in my Archies, WITHOUT PAIN. I spent Sunday performing 6 hours of yard work in my Asics. By the end of the day, my heels were killing me. I slipped on my Archies and IMMEDIATE RELIEF!!! I’ve been using my Archies instead of slippers or walking barefoot while doing household chores, and NO PAIN! The true test was this week when I wore my Archies to work (Don’t tell my boss). I spend 8 hours a day, on concrete, treating patients. My plantar fascia pain was almost non-existent by the end of the week!
And now let’s get into the nitty gritty about why these flip flops are just so amazing!
Key Benefits of Archies
- Almost 1 inch of arch support encourages optimal foot posture and alignment.
- If you have flat feet, the arch support will create a more natural alignment starting at your feet and working the way up the chain into your legs.
- If you have high arches, the arch support will not only support your arch like an orthotic, but also helps to “share the load” and evenly distribute the pressure across the foot.
- Elevated heel
- A higher heel will help take some slack and tension off the Achilles tendon.
- Tight Strap
- Most flips flops are loose and “flop” on your feet. Whether you realize it or not, this causes you to curl your toes to grab the flip flop, which does not allow your arch to appropriately activate and can cause undue stress and possible injury.
- A tighter strap allows your flip flop to “stick” to your feet and cause a more appropriate arch activation and normal gait cycle.
Archies are the perfect complimentary device to your orthotics! They have the same amount of support as a typical off the shelf orthotic and they will be perfect to wear in and around the house when you are not wearing your orthotics, which will still enable you to get some great support, but also give your feet some much needed fresh air.
And even if you don’t have foot problems or need orthotics, Archies can still be your best choice of footwear. Most people simply purchase Archies for the comfort and the positive effect they have on promoting a more natural gait cycle. The soft foam material molds to your foot and will help relieve some stress on the joints from walking and/or standing on hard tiles and surfaces.
